January 13 is a big day in the Swedish tradition: King Knut Day. Time to remove the Christmas tree--sometimes by tossing it out the window! This tradition is called "julgransplundring" (translated as "plundering the Christmas tree"). The celebration incorporates song, dance, and sweets to eat. Who knew, years and years ago, Lindsborg would become such an attraction for artists? Like much of the pioneer period, singing Messiah began as a way for Swedish immigrants to learn English. Who would've predicted that practical exercise would result in performances across the country and continue into 2026, the 145th year of performing Messiah? In 1899, three artists decided Holy Week and Messiah needed a visual art exhibition. The first day of the first "Pioneer Mid-West Art Week", only one person viewed the exhibition. Perhaps it was that famous characteristic of Swedes (stubborness) that made the three continue for the rest of the week and for years following. In 2026, the Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery will hold the 128th Annual Midwest Art Exhibition, a direct descendent of that first year's experimental exhibition. So today's featured article is one based on architecture. Lindsborg and architecture? St. Lucia--a light in the darkness. Hope. Warmth. Kindness. The legend of Saint Lucia tells the story of a young girl, clad in a white gown with a red sash, her head surrounded by a halo of light, who appeared to bring hope, warmth and food to those in need during a time of famine in Sweden. Saturday, December 13, the Lindsborg Swedish Folk Dancers lead the St. Lucia Festival celebration. Come to be a part of the beautiful tradition of serving and giving. The dancers will also be hosting a Swedish bake sale in the Courtyard building with proceeds donated to a local charity. A guest lecture and slideshow titled "Growing Up Greenough" will occur at the Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery on Sunday, October 26, at 2:00pm. The talk will cover the family story of Charles Pelham Greenough, 3rd (1908-1983), who became one of the chief organizers and benefactors of the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery. It will trace Pelham’s descent from many prominent old English and East Coast Greenoughs, along with his time growing up in Boston, Massachusetts. The lecture also focuses on his aunt, Ethel Greenough Holmes (1879-1964) of Boston and Kansas City, and her association with the mobile, talented, and artistic Swedish American Birger, Alfrida, and Margaret Sandzen. “Aunt Ethel,” as she became known among the family, was initially an art student of Birger Sandzen (1871-1954) before she introduced her nephew Pelham to the Sandzen’s daughter, Margaret (1909-1993). The presentation considers the growing and diverse art interests in both the Sandzen and Greenough families, as well as how these exceptional individuals helped Lindsborg become a distinguished art center. The presenter, John Goff, is a retired architect and historian. He is also the grandson of Barbara Greenough Bradley (1913-2002), Pelham Greenough’s first cousin. The Smoky Valley Men’s Choir was formed in 1997 at the request of Carroll Lindgren, a member of the Svensk Hyllningsfest Committee, and a fine tenor. Men’s choirs have a long tradition in Sweden and given the vocal talent of the men in the Smoky Valley, it seemed only fitting to form a choir for the festival. Today, members of the SVMC are farmers, bankers, teachers, social workers, builders, students, businessmen, and some, happily retired! The repertoire for tonight’s concert included a variety of music to take the audience back to remember people, places, and moments in time that have become a part of our personal history.
